COPY. LINOTYPE & MACHINERY LIMITED, BROADHEATH, ALTRINCHAM, CHESHIRE. H/T. Oct. 22nd. 1918. FOR THE ATTENTION OF MR. TONGE. Messrs. Rolls-Royce Ltd., DERBY. Dear Sirs, We beg to acknowledge receipt of your telegram of the 19th. inst., reading as follows:- "We sent six special valve rockers three or four weeks ago for machining Have you machined these Wire position must know something Monday". in reply to which we sent you the following telegram:- "Despatching six finished rockers from new style forgings tomorrow letter to follow". and as promised therein we are despatching to-day the six Rockers made from the new style forgings in a separate package addressed for the attention of yourself. With respect to the machining of the above Rocker Stampings, we find the material very close and slightly harder than the old type forgings. You will note the stamping marks show several of these rockers and have not been polished purposely, to show where extra material is required. The above rockers have all been machined from one given setting point, and the marks left in are due to the slight variation in the stampings. If additional metal is added to these places, the stampings will be quite O.K. as regards machining, and would certainly ease our position here respecting the heavy maintenance of Milling Cutters, which are required for the old type of forgings.
