Note on heavy gearbox oil consumption in Phantom II models, suggesting the cause is oil leakage from the tail end bearing.

S/W. Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}..from PN.{Mr Northey} Copy to Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} I have received the following note from FBS.{F. Bell-Scott} and should be glad of any remarks. "I find the consumption of gearbox oil in the three Phantom II's I have used is considerably greater than in the old Phantoms. A recent test on Chassis No. 2-WJ showed that a quart was necessary to bring up to correct oil lever after 400 miles. It would appear that the cause of this heavy comsumption is due to oil passing out through the tail end bearing when running. It leads one to wonder if there is sufficient clearance between the oil retaining ring and the box." PN.{Mr Northey} | ||
