C O P Y. ----- Letter from:- THOS.FIRTH & SONS LIMITED, Steel Department, Norfolk Works, Sheffield. Ref.- JWF/AC. Messrs.Rolls-Royce Ltd., 17th Nov.1921. Nightingale Road, Derby. Dear Sirs, "Goshawk 11" - Laminated Road Springs. We are in receipt of your letter of the 16th inst. ref.- Wd {Mr Wood / Mr Whitehead} 4/NJ161121. with regard to our supplying the top leaves for you to fit on to the remaining portions of the springs supplied by Messrs.Woodheads. After giving this matter very careful consideration, and realising the importance to you of early delivery, as mentioned by Mr.Wormald, we have decided to withdraw our objection to this, and are immediately proceeding with the manufacture of these top leaves as early as ever possible. Unfortunately, however, our Works are completely closed down this week, and consequently nothing can be done until we commence our forging plant up on Tuesday next week. I am sure that you will quite realise that the plant for the manufacture of such leaves at our disposal is considerably limited, due to the fact that it is all new, and it will necessitate making these top leaves with appliances which are not really suitable for the various processes. Consequently, we cannot of course take any responsibility in the behaviour of these top leaves, nor can they be considered as a fair sample of what we propose to supply for your standard product. We naturally will do all we can to make them as satisfactory as possible, especially with regard to heat-treatment. So far as giving a definite undertaking of delivery, we prefer not to do this at the present time, as we really hardly know what difficulties we shall come up against in making these leaves by such methods. Anyway, we do not expect to deliver them before the end of this month. We think it only right to inform you of this so that if you do not care to wait this length of time, it will give you an opportunity of making them yourselves. We are very sorry indeed to have to give you what we are sure to you is an unsatisfactory undertaking, but until (contd) | ||
