September 7th 1937 Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/NRC.{N. R. Chandler}7/AP. Messrs Borg & Beck Ltd., LEAMINGTON SPA Dear Sirs, Re. 13 1/4" Long type Plates. We regret to inform you that in the last few consignments of plates received there are several faults in manufacture which did not apply to earlier consignments, these are:- 1. Many of the brass rivet heads are considerably bent up at the edges with the result that the effective wear allowance is, in some cases, no more than .010. This appears to be due to the anvil not being properly located when rivetting. 2. The clearance holes in the floating facing are not coincident with the iron rivets in the centre plate, with the result that the facing will bulge when loaded where it rests on the rivet heads. 3. In one case the centre plate is not down on the face of the hub flange, and a .006" feeler can easily be inserted. 4. The centre plates are received rusty. We are returning to you two plates exhibiting these faults, but of those we have so far examined, faults 1,2 and 4 appear to be fairly general. We feel that on examination of the plates returned, you will agree that these complaints are fully justified. Yours faithfully, FOR ROLLS-ROYCE LTD. | ||
