To DY{F R Danby} from R.{Sir Henry Royce} Copy to SY " " HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} ORIGINAL 2 R4/G27/4/21. RECEIVED APR 29 1929 XL247 RE "GOSHAWK II" - GEAR BOX. With reference to your suggestion of fixing the brake quadrant by studs and nuts, this scheme was naturally thought of at the time the designs were made, but as it was impracticable to use a nut on one of the studs, we considered the bolts, as shown, the best solution, both alike for uniformity. It is intended that the keyways should only be very shallow, in fact very small indeed, so that the broaching of the grooves in the bolts would be quite an easy matter. Perhaps we were slightly timid as to the value of tapped holes in aluminium, and it may be advisable for us to test whether a plain stud without a nut at the back would be good enough for this purpose and position. Moreover, if one of the studs only had a nut at the back this should give sufficient security for no harm in case the studs were somewhat defective through bad workmanship. I think, therefore, we had better test out the simple stud arrangement, fitting the one that permits of it with a nut. R, | ||
