18.G.IV.

We have received your letter Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}3/AD.16.11.31.
We note your remarks re. diamond mounting of the engine and the exhaust system. We have obtained, after our setting of the diamond mounting, as per our letter of the 13th. inst a very smooth engine and practically an entire absence of booms. We brought the spring plates out with us and will fit them this week end and note whether they tend to produce any booms.

Re. Exhaust System.

Our exhaust, up to the moment of writing, has given no trouble and the sliding joint is working perfectly. The stay anchored to the frame and midway down the exhaust pipe appears to be quite satisfactory. With the new exhaust system you are sending out, will it be possible to fit this stay?

Re. Acceleration Tests.

We have taken a series of acceleration tests before altering the carburetter or ignition. We do not think however that we shall be able to alter the ignition as the engine has just started to detonate upon acceleration. Our figures taken in comparison with 14.G.IV. does not show the depreciation of the acceleration apparently as much as what you noticed with the London's trial car. There car must be very good for the low speed accelerations. We enclose the results of the accelerations and figures taken with 14.G.IV. We are sorry but we did not take acceleration tests with 19.G.IV. with it being a standard engine and of a poor performance.

Re. Crankshaft Periods.

As already reported to you we easily obtain a speed of 81 M.P.H. but so far there has been no sign of running into the master period. We are very carefully watching this point.

Re. Slipper Wheel.

With regard to the timing gear rattle, it will all depend on who is the owner of the car, as you are aware that we have some owners who delight in picking out any period they can, and with this kind of person we should definitely be in trouble, but taking the job generally, we do not think that it would be objected to. It is very easy to put the engine gear rattle down to other parts of the car. We should certainly say that this slipper wheel is worse than P.II.
