ORIGINAL

20HP. STARTER PINION MODIFICATIONS. X3587.

We send herewith drawings LeCs. 2441/2. dealing with the above.

The former shews modifications for trial with the existing parts, and on the existing motor. The motor spindle remains unaltered.

The latter shews modifications for future work in which case the motor spindle has been supplied with a larger thread on the end, is approximately .3 longer, and is drilled up for lubrication purposes.

We ask at first for an Enots nipple to be used in connection with an oil gun, and we are hoping that ordinary engine oil will do.

Later the pinion should be connected up by means of a drip plug to a scheme of central lubrication, in which the engine oil would be used.

The various schemes to be tried are as follows -

(1) Increased initial torque and lighter holding out spring - LeC. 2441.

(2) Limited final torque, lighter holding out spring, and initial torque as at present - LeC. 2441. Try also with increased initial torque.

(3) Same as (2) but with a stronger spring of square section wire to fit in the same place, and with increased initial torque. This should only be tried if (2) torque is found insufficient.

(4) Increased initial torque, lighter holding out spring, and limited final torque, with improved scheme of lubrication - LeC. 2442.
