8 1020a To Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} from Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Mths.{Reg Matthews} c. Mr.Devereux. Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Mths.{Reg Matthews}3/MH.{M. Huckerby}17.1.38. REPORT OF VISIT TO MORRIS COMMERCIAL CARS LTD. At the request of Mr. Herrington of High Duty Alloys the writer interviewed Mr. Leeding who is the Research Engineer of Morris Commercial Cars Ltd. Unlike previous firms visited this firm does not require bearings at the moment, but merely wanted to discuss the merits of the bearing, having little knowledge of its possibilities. They are, at the moment, designing an oil engine but so far everything is on paper and at that there is very little. From what we could gather the engine is to be of six cylinders 85 m/m bore by 120 m/m stroke approx., maximum pressure to be about 1000 lbs/sq.in. and they intend to keep bearing loads as low as possible. The writer saw the part finished drawing of their crankshaft layout and this is to be a seven bearing shaft with hollow pins and journals, a separate feed to each main bearing after our own practice, and in general looks quite a nice layout. They had not at the time laid out the various oil passages in the shaft but the design is such that it could be made almost an exact replica of the Bentley and all the modification we have found necessary could be incorporated. Having viewed this drawing the writer left the matter with Mr. Leeding to get in touch with us again if and when they desire bearings for a completed engine, and suggested that if they do decide to try the bearings to let us have particulars of their crank, connecting and oil system layouts when completed, and we should be pleased to advise them on any modifications we should think necessary. The writer stressed the point of good filtration and promised to let Mr.Leeding have details of a good type of by-pass filter so that this could also be incorporated in the design.
