TO DA.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} from Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}

Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rml/LG25.1.29.

There appear to be one or two outstanding features of which Hancock has complained on his 10,000 miles test reports which have not yet been dealt with. These include :-

(1) Re-design oil escape pipes from centre housing and from toggle shaft housing. These are too near the brake drum shield and become choked with dirt.

We are trying one or two schemes to prevent this, but you will possibly like to issue a design.

(2) Front springs rear anchorage pins not sufficient bearing surface.

The front axle control possibly throws a greater load on these pins than heretofore.

(3) Ball end control dampers - no lubrication, and improved lubrication to bottom of triangular lever.

(4) Rear springs rust at ends, and lubricator needed.

We are testing out your schemes for spring lubrication which should overcome this trouble, if we can get R.{Sir Henry Royce} to agree to the springs being drilled.

(5) Lubrication of front brake shafts.

Hancock has sent us a note to say that this requires immediate attention. From his 10,000 miles report we gather it is merely a question of drip plug size. We are writing to him to get more information on this subject.

(6) Pendulum lever ball end wear.

Hancock has reported that this is excessive. It may be due to us using N.sch.2301 side steering tube end for the first time. The fact that the ball leaves one pad and then comes back on to it may allow dirt to get on the faces. We shall have to get more information on this subject

As far as we can see, the points for which you could let us have a scheme are :

The axle control damper ball end and bearing lubrication.

Rear brake oil drain pipe.

We have mentioned the other points so that you may bear the possible alterations in mind. Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}
