use would be the rigid adherence to the principle, which we believe to be at present in force, of uncoupling at the back end, and leaving the tank unit top in two distinct portions; one supported on the air lines, and the other contained in the tank; the final assembly of the two parts of this tank unit top to be done at the coachbuilders as a last job as at present.

This would necessitate, and we had in mind, the fitting of an aluminium block of exactly the same size as the top portion of the tank unit, to screw down with three set screws on to the washer, and make a good petrol joint for ordinary running purposes.

The top half would have to be similarly protected, so as to prevent any damage occurring to the machined face, which eventually bolts down against the washer upon final assembly.

Unless it were possible to adopt this procedure, we should be definitely against the introduction of this design, but we believe that from a functional point of view it would probably work as well as the existing design, and of course as far as appearance is concerned, there is much to be said in its favour.

We conclude that in accordance with your usual practice, you will make extensive trials with this design before accepting it, as we should be very loath to make the change unless it were very fully tested.
