To R.{Sir Henry Royce} from EFC. c. to CJ. c. to E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} c. to Bn.{W.O. Bentley / Mr Barrington} c. to Ds. c. to Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} X.2894 - TUNGSTEN LOW TENSION CONTACT POINTS. With reference to your R8/G26.4.20 and further to our EFC1/T20.10.19 reporting our work to date on low tension tungsten contact points, the difficulty with tungsten all along is that although we have obtained several different specimens of tungsten rod, our experimental shop have always said that they have been unable to work this to make it into contacts. The only tungsten contact points, therefore, we have been able to try are those we have received ready made up into points, as follows :- A.{Mr Adams} We have had such points suitable for the standard Watford magnetos from the L.P.S. Co., of which the first lot were unsatisfactory on test. The second lot were unfortunately lost and the third lot (a single pair) have been fitted to a Watford magneto and are still awaiting test on the bench. These latter are supposed to be of more suitable material than the first. B. We have had Delco contacts obtained from the Remy Electric Company, one pair of which was analised by Messrs. Johnson Matthey and found to be tungsten, the other pair of which we had fitted to a screw and blade and run on the 10,000 mile car. These unfortunately were unsatisfactory owing to the imperfect condenser connection, which does not, however, prove that tungsten is not satisfactory provided other things are right. Contd. | ||
