To: "Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}" From: G.W.Hancock. Hotel de France, Chateauroux. Indre. France. November 24th, 1925. Chassis 8 EX. Report after 5,000 miles. E N G I N E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} The engine base drained of oil. filter taken out, examined & found very clean. Base refilled with clean oil. Power. Engine power is still good. We have not noticed any falling off whatsoever. Lubrication of cylinders. These are still even & have normal lubrication. Condition of cylinder walls. They are still in a good condition. Valves & fittings. Improved lubrication to tappets to Sch. 634, otherwise to L.O.P. E.72113. Improved bottom valve spring washer Ex. 941, with more effective spigot for spring. Oil holes on valve end of inlet rockers plugged, but arranged to allow a very slight leak of oil. These have functioned O.K. during the test. Clearance between valves & rockers have remained constant. No. 4 inlet valve, as previously reported, - slight tapping noise - is not now apparent. This has not been attended to, but has disappeared during the running. Lubrication of rockers is good. We still have a slight tappet noise from bottom of No. 2 tappet guide. This is not noticed on the road, but can be heard with the engine running when car is stationary. Pistons. Fitted with new Brice unlapped piston rings. The amount of carbon on top of pistons has not been increased very much since our last report. After running light for a short period, examination inside cylinders shews pistons to be damp, but at present there is no sign of over-oiling. There are no definite piston knocks. Ignition plugs. "Lodge" detachable 200 type. These are still in good condition. After slow running for a short period, plugs are slightly damp with oil, but not to any extent to cause misfires. | ||
