BENTLEY REAR AXLE NO. B.75.AE.

The above is a customer's rear axle which has had repeated bearing trouble, and we give herewith a strip report of same.

Pinion Housing G.100829. - had .017 float between bearing and housing instead of .002 nip. Housing flanges damaged, large burrs not allowing the housing to seat correctly.

Centre Casing GB.612. - alignment of crossbores O.K. Pinion housing face damaged and burrs .013 high, again not allowing the housing to seat correctly.

Adjustment Washer G.100833/6. - worn on both sides to a total of .009. Washer also has large burrs.

1. Chamfer filed on both sides of washer should be machined to be foolproof.

2. Burrs and damaged faces would throw the pinion out of alignment.

3. Suggest the bearing area of bearing adjustment washer GB.613/18 should be increased .200 dia to overcome possible wear, as the land is small on present washers.

Conclusions :- Failure due to insufficient nip on bearing on original assembly.
