X1020 Exptl. Dept. Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/FJH.{Fred J. Hardy - Chief Dev. Engineer}17/KW. 15th July, 1936. Your Ref: Tech.Dept.JK/HF.{H. W. Frost - Coachwork Inspector} The Ransome & Marles Bearing Co.Ltd., Newark-on-Trent. For the attention of O.G.H.Richardson Esq. Dear Sirs, We thank you for your letter of the 13th inst., and the print of your proposals in connection with our 25/30 steering roller. At the present stage we can see no reason why your proposed dimensions and method of production should not be entirely satisfactory, and we have no criticism to offer. We appreciate the necessity for accuracy in the bore and on the end faces of the parts as supplied to you, and we will impress this upon our suppliers. We wish to mention that our present practice is to use oversize distance pieces and to reface these to suit individual assemblies. For the purpose of preventing slack developing with use, we assemble these bearings with a preload corresponding to a torque of 2 - 3 lbs.ins. on the roller and we should require the same load on the bearings assembled by you. If you consider that this is either excessive or inadequate for the purpose, we would be glad if you would let us know. We propose to send you 15 sets of parts and the appropriate drawings in the near future and as soon as we find that these are satisfactory on test we shall standardise this method of production. Yours faithfully, FOR ROLLS-ROYCE LIMITED. | ||
