P. 2. EPICYCLIC 3rd. SPEED GEARBOX.

N7310

Herewith we send N. schemes 3296/7. shewing the modification to the above box incorporating a friction clutch and brake in place of the existing Maybach type dogs.

Since we are using the existing casing and as much of the existing parts as possible, a good deal of this scheme is of a temporary nature, the object being to demonstrate the principle. It is thought for instance that there is no need to make extensive provision for wear and facility of production, since only this one will be made. If the experiment proves successful a revision of the whole design would be undertaken.

With the exception of the top gear striking mechanism the whole of the rearbox is unaltered. We have endeavoured to use as many pieces of the front box as possible, but though we have had to make some new ones it has been necessary to make slight modifications to some of the existing ones.

We have shewn an existing 20HP. oil pump. It is realised that this may not give us quite as quick a change as we desire but it is thought that it will be possible to demonstrate the principle with it.

Particulars of the modification to the top gear striking fork will be sent immediately.
