X356 TBB8/L3512. May 3rd. 1912. Mr Royce Mr Johnson Re Cotton Fabric Cone Clutch. ------------------------- Tests have been made with 3/16" fabric instead of 1/4" and up to the present it has been satisfactory, but Mr Hives is inclined to favour very slightly the thicker fabric. During the first tests made with this thinner fabric the clutch was found to jagger very badly on top gear but not on the lower speeds. The car on which these first tests were made was not fitted with a foot brake drum, and for the purpose of verification, a thinner cotton clutch was fitted when it was found to jagger in an exactly similar manner. The foot-brake drum was then put in place and no jaggering occured on either clutch. This point will no doubt interest you with reference to the removal of the foot brake drum. We have not yet made any experiments or tests to find out the reason for this peculiarity. We now have on order or in course of construction, 220 cotton fabric cone clutches with 1/4" thick material. A second thin fabric clutch is in hand in the shops with aluminium countersunk round the rivet holes | ||
