Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/FJH.{Fred J. Hardy - Chief Dev. Engineer}3/JH. 7.9.36.

Continental Phantom III Steering.

Further to our memo. Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/FJH.{Fred J. Hardy - Chief Dev. Engineer}13/KW.1.9.36. we attach particulars of the remainder of the steering system for the above chassis.

Prints Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} 204/5 shew the layout of the Wraith steering gear and the modifications to the gear itself. Referring to Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} 204 the altered position of the side steering tube necessitates a modified bend in the off side downtake pipe and a modified outlet from the oil pump. The oil filter is to be left off this chassis. Both side steering tube joints to be as Wraith front joint to N.Sch.4791. Referring to Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}205, we are not yet able to give you the angle between the axis of the roller follower and that of the rockershaft but as this will differ only about 1° from Wraith, the Wraith forging will modify. We will give you the dimensions as soon as possible.

We will supply the cam, roller and inner races for the roller.

The attached Sk.5016 shews the modified centre steering lever. This can be made from the standard forging.

Will you please make the necessary detail drawings and construct two sets of parts. Will you please also let us know the weight of the modified part in comparison with those they replace.

We wish to point out that Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}205 calls for modified mounting on the frame and correspondingly modified idstance pieces in the frame.

Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/E.J.Hardy.
