R.{Sir Henry Royce} From AG/GMD. C. to Mr. C. to Mr. H.{Arthur M. Hanbury - Head Complaints} C. to Mr. HV. x2965. x2444. EXPERIMENTAL ENGINES. SPECIAL AERO WATER SYSTEM. (CLAIM NO. 2444.) Further investigation has been carried out on a 1S engine fitted with the new carb in the Vee, with regard to the suitability of the top water system for evaporative cooling conditions. We find that the new carb water jackets create a greater restriction to the water flow than the old type and in consequence the pressure in the cyl block becomes excessive thus causing violent reversals even when the throttle was closed gently. In our previous report No. G10.4/A/R.4.6.32., in our preliminary investigations with the old type carburetter we found that by adapting a pipe in the Core plug holes at the front of the cyl blocks and leading them back to the header tank was sufficient to relieve the pressures in block, viz, the reversal of flow. In this case however as larger dia pipes are required than the core plug holes will permit and therefore we have had to investigate some other means of reducing the cylinder jacket pressures whilst still by-passing the front water outlet branch, this can be accomplished but it will also mean an alteration to the front main pipe casting as described later. PROPOSAL. There are two schemes for reducing the pressures either of which can be used with equal results. The first means additional connections in the header tank and the second the engine water system is complete in itself. Scheme 1. Alteration to the Front Pipe Casting. (1) Part to be Drilled :- Gland unit (a.{Mr Adams} 23546) fitted on cyl block at front water outlet and interconnections pipe between the gland and the main Y pipe. MODIFICATION. The bore to be increased to take a 1 1/4" I.D. Inter-connecting pipe. The present size is 1.4 O.D. | ||
