Mr. E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} W. Hives,
Rolls-Royce, Ltd.,
Derby, England.

Dear Mr. Hives:

Re Brake Dampers

I attach arrangement and detail prints showing the scheme of aluminum rear brake damper which was put on two cars some years ago at your suggestion.

One of these cars, a Silver Ghost, has run 18,000 miles and the other, a Springfield Phantom, with front brakes, has run 20,000 miles.

In both cases the brakes were free from squeaking and I think it is correct to say that we have no case of the rear brakes running with no squeaking for as long a distance on any standard car.

Will you tell me whether, in your opinion the system of dampers is acceptable for adoption on our next series of cars? If you know of no serious objection to it, will you please write me and I will start a proposal sheet in circulation with a view to our standardizing these dampers at about chassis 2301.

Yours very truly,
Maurice Olley
