STORAGE and RE-COMMISSIONING OF CARS.

If a car is to stand idle for any length of time, the following operations should be carried out:-

1. The water should be left in the system unless there is any danger of freezing, when it should be drained out.

2. All petrol should be drained from the main tank, vacuum tank, dashboard filter and carburetter.

3. Both axles should be jacked up so as to take all weight off the tyres. The latter should not be deflated but must be covered up to exclude light.

4. The crankcase should be drained, preferably when the engine is warm.

5. When the engine is cold a quarter of a syringe-full of engine oil should be injected through the sparking plug holes of each cylinder, and the crankshaft turned over by hand a few times to distribute the oil over the cylinder walls.

6. The engine should be cranked over by hand once a week during storage. It must not be run under its own power.

7. All bright parts should be cleaned and lightly smeared with vaseline.

If the parts have an untarnishable finish, such vaselining is both unnecessary and undesirable.

8. The coachwork should be washed down and polished, the hood (in the case of an open touring car) extended, and the whole covered with a light dust sheet.
