Re Bentley III Frame.

We give below a resume of our interview with Mr.Buckley of Messrs.Rubery Owen, concerning the design of the Bentley III Frame and cross.

Side Members.

The Wraith II side member demands left and right hand dies, each having pressure plates. The dies have to be steel faced around the bends and the pressing springs open on coming out of the die. In the case of the Bentley III, the pressings go through the die which need not be steel faced, and has no pressure plate.

It was estimated that the cost of the four dies for the Bentley III would not exceed that for the two dies of Wraith II, and most probably would be cheaper.

It was desired that we should ease off the bend over the rear axle, slightly increasing the radius at this point in order to facilitate the pressing.

The minimum width for introducing the electrode between the top and bottom welding flanges is 2" and we have agreed to modify our design to give a liberal 2" at the rear horn, which is the only place where such a small dimension occurs.

It was verified that to keep the width of the side channel constant for the whole length would facilitate the manufacture and cheapen the construction, and we have done this.

Where aluminium distance pieces occur these will act as spacers. Should there be any considerable length without distance pieces it will be necessary to provide hand holes into which the makers can introduce temporary spacers, and we have arranged to do this, or alternatively to provide them with bolt holes in the welding flange for the insertion of temporary bolts during welding.

There is no difficulty in making the frame side member pressings to slide together because both push through the dies and are therefore Square.
