Martindale}10/JH OUR REF. WES/AC Fyle Messrs. Rolls Royce Limited, Derby. For the attention of Mr. A.F. Martindale. Dear Sirs, We have to acknowledge your letter of the 21st. instant addressed to Mr. Longley, who is at present away. We note the trouble you are experiencing in the shape of brake squeal with one particular Bentley car, and that although you have since fitted Ferodo B.Z. linings, these brakes are still producing noise. In a number of cases recently where a similar complaint has been made with regard to brakes on other makes of vehicles, we have recommended the fitting of Ferodo S.5805 lining, and have found that this has been effective in securing complete silence from the brakes. In regard to your enquiry as to the type of lining fitted to Bendix brakes, this material is moulded and is produced specially to meet the requirements of a self-energising brake. In our opinion the coefficient of friction would be too low to be of use on your standard brake layout. With regard to the type of lining generally in use in America, as you know, the Bendix brake is extremely popular there and is fitted with a similar type of lining to that which we supply to the Bendix Company in this country. The remainder of the American market mainly uses non-metallic woven linings similar to Ferodo M.R. lining. In view of the last paragraph of your letter we are immediately putting in hand one set of linings in Ferodo S.5805 material and will forward these to you marked for your attention. In conclusion the writer would inform you that we have had a considerable amount of experience during the last year or two with the very efficient brakes fitted to a number of modern cars, and we have found that the few cases of persistent brake squeal brought to our notice have been satisfactorily silenced by removing the linings, coating the shoes with a heat-resisting, quick setting cement and refitting the same linings. - continued - | ||
