X.4056. RE REAR ROAD SPRINGS. X.2628b.

We discussed the question of rear road springs with Mr. Royce yesterday and he agreed that we should return to the pre-war type of spring. The only question was whether we should go back to the parabolic end such as was used then, or use the new square end.

Though we prefer the square end we think that in order to get it right, more work wants to be done on it than has hitherto been the case, both by ourselves and by the spring makers, and we think that the proper thing to do at present is to instruct the pre-war spring entirely, except for the new solid eye and the re-arrangement of the rear end of the second plate in order to suit the roller plate, which modifications are shewn on F.7973.

With reference to the spring clip, Mr. Royce approved in general of the solid clip which Messrs, Woodhead have fitted to the later experimental spring with square ends. This clip has two bolts and is at present a gun metal castings. We suggest that we should endeavour to use this clip but only if it can be got as a steel stamping with reasonable facility. If difficulties arise then we suggest that the present clip should be gone on with until a new clip can be brought in.
