X3400 Road Springs for Rolls-Royce of America Inc. 82628 In reply to yours EWT18/G5.8.20, we are to-day ordering from Jonas Woodhead & Sons Ltd. the 240 front springs detailed in the cable which I understand Springfield addressed to us on the 19th ult. and a copy of which came into my possession on the 30th ult. but we are not ordering the rear springs detailed in the same cable, as the question of pattern is to come up for discussion at the meeting of the Works Board on monday next, 9th inst. As Jonas Woodhead & Sons' Works are at present closed for holidays, I shall not be able to ascertain until they re-open on monday next what the prospects of delivery are. I must, however, point out to you that owing to the substitution of rear springs with solid main plates for rear springs with slotted main plates, Woodheads are unable at present to keep pace with Derby Requirements and I am afraid they will not be able to take in hand any rear springs for R.R. of A.{Mr Adams} Inc. for three or four weeks to come and then, of course, there is the question of pattern to be settled. Should it be decided to standardise rear springs with thinner leaves than the present standard, some months will elapse before the order for rear springs can be taken in hand, as material will have to be specially rolled for the new pattern of spring.
