X.4305 29.12.20. Extract from EP {G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer} 15/F29.12.20. X.3473 X.4050 X.2474 X.4305 EXPERIMENTAL CAR 2.EX. Starting up in cold weather. The special device on the carburetter was very effective for starting up as long as it was properly used. The carburation generally, however, is still very bad until the engine is properly warmed up. This scheme seems to have the advantage of obtaining a better mixture when it is in action and does not send out black smoke from the exhaust or give one the impression that the cylinders are being flooded with live petrol. I should like your report on the condition of the plugs and the lubrication generally. The system seems encouraging but requires certain further work on it to make it really effective, such as the "hot spot" exhaust scheme suggested, and a better means of controlling the throttle.
