Steel Stone-guard with Continuous Attachment - Bentley.

We have been requested by the Expl. Dept. to produce a scheme for a stone-guard for the Bentley petrol tank similar to FB.266, but having a continuous attachment to the tank in place of localised soldered attachments.

It is suggested that this design would cheapen the cost of the blank for the pressing. We show the suggestion on LeC.5500 herewith.

We understand from the Tool Dept. that as our quantities will be so small, neither blanking dies nor pressing dies will be made, but that the piece will be made by hand shearing, and a simple forming block on which to hammer, in which case the cost of shearing one shape or the other will not materially influence the answer.

With respect to the sweating, we foresee there may be difficulties with the design shown on LeC.5500. The stiffener has to be put on the tank when finished and a continuous sweat is very awkward as it peels up in front of the iron. It would appear that the sweating time will be longer and more expensive.

We are sending a print of this scheme to the Cost Dept. to have its price compared with that of FB.2666
