OBSERVATIONS. The above were three actual pump failures. We have had two cases in which we found the E.71314a Pump Cover to have been badly worn & caused by excessive end thrust of the rotor shaft same causing the lignum vitea thrust plug to wear away & consequently damaging the pump cover. We think that overtightening of the gland nut was responsible for the above, one end cover was worn to the depth of 1/8", rotors were not damaged. We have carried out the modification jobs to the outer glands packing to a considerable No. of cars, the job always proving satisfactory up to the present. We ourselves cannot say whether the above modification is a definite cure. We have up to the present had no trouble from pumps when same have been modified.
As you will observe we have not classed the modification job as a pump failure.

EXHAUST CUT-OUT. TROUBLES.
We have had very few complaints Re: this trouble Have overcome same by the usual adjustments. Trouble due to expansion of silencer & sluggish action of cut-out valve.
No doubt the positive control will greatly reduce complaints Re: above.

NOISY ENGINE GEARS.
We have had one actual complaint Re: this trouble on chassis 34-HC. Gears found to be very noisy due to rattle & sing. Same dismantled & cam & idler wheel teeth on forward side found to be badly worn, due we think to the agency of some foreign matter having got mixed with the oil. We fitted a complete set of new engine gears including a steel idler gear wheel. We took great care in the fitting of these, giving correct end play & gear centres. We previously noted that the gears had been run-in & were a perfect finish & due to the latter we overcame the trouble in a very short time with the minimum of trouble & difficulty. We should state that the original ball bearings were found to have excessive wear which necessitated changing same. We know of some of the earlier engine where the gears are not quiet, same rattle & ring but we have not had an actual complaint from client & so have not pressed the matter with regard to changing same. We cannot suggest a cure for noisy engine gears as local conditions in engine vary.

MAGNETOS NOISY. 6..- 1..- 21-MC. Magneto found to make more noise than whole of engine This was dismantled & a considerable amount of slackness was found between the bearing (brass ring) (at H.T. pick up end) of the pole shoe extension sleeve and the almn. end cover (ball bearing housing).
To overcome the difficulty (when we are up against it) we reduced the sleeve 1/32" by turning same it down then tinned the reduced portion of brass ring & ran a layer of white metal over same, then turned the white metal down to give the required clearances.
