The question of a support in the immediate vicinity of the first speed gear, in order to produce silence, appears to me to be important. If it is a controlling factor, it rules out the design of box which we have prepared for the Myth, unless we use plain side shaft bearings which, from the examination of other boxes, do not seem very promising. We have, however, a number of Bentley V boxes with noisy first speeds and we suggest that, if we select the quietest of these and arrange a support from the case close to the first speed wheel on the cluster gear shaft, we might get the required information. Will Ev{Ivan Evernden - coachwork}/Tln. please look into this and see what sort of experiment he can suggest. The nicest arrangement would be to have a support which would be easily adjustable from the outside of the box, so that it could be applied or removed while the car was on the road.
