RE OIL RELIEF SYSTEM FOR "VULTURE" ENGINE.
In connection with the question of the excessive pressure in the oil system generated by the pump when starting up a cold engine, Mr. Royce points out that some limit to this pressure is always provided by the resistance of the oil suction pipe to the pump, that is to say, if the oil is so thick due to the low temperature that it will not escape easily through the engine, then it will have similar difficulty in getting into the pump at all through the suction side of the system.
If this is so, then it is not necessary to have a relief valve and passage of very large area for when the engine is cold, and it remains to be seen what is the smallest size that can be used when the engine is at normal temperature.
Mr. Royce would like you to find out what size of pipe connected to the main oil delivery will relieve the oil pressure when the engine is running fast.
