Wor{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager}: from Wd.{Mr Wood/Mr Whitehead} c.to By.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} c.to Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} 49410 Wd{Mr Wood/Mr Whitehead}8/NJ24.11.24. 43½" Centres, 12½% Stiffer type Front Springs. 40/50 HP. Chassis. I am informed that we require 264 front springs of the 12½% stiffer type to replace that number of temporary springs of other types fitted in chassis. The number is made up as follows:- Chassis already sent away........ 35 Chassis still in Test Dept....... 85 Chassis in Repair Dept.......... 12 --- 132 Against these 264 front springs, we have in Stores and in transit to us about 110 springs and Woodheads have still to despatch to us 100 springs, leaving a deficiency of 54 springs for chassis already built, without making any provision for production. We have on order with Firths 200 springs of this type, of which 12 either have or will be delivered to Experimental Dept. The balance, 188 springs, will take care of production up to the end of "U" Series and leave a balance of 66 springs. Our difficulty is that we cannot correctly forecast the poundages of springs called for; therefore we are always liable at any time to have in stock a number of springs which are not usable. If the Administration agree to our instructing Firths to proceed with the balance of 188 springs ordered from them, we can to some extent level up the various poundages, but presumably it will be preferred that a pair of Woodheads or a pair of Firths front springs be always fitted, and not one of each make. By this means we should be able to carry on for another fortnight to three weeks without placing a further order, but if it is decided that permission may not now be given to Firths to complete the springs they have on order, we should in my opinion forthwith place another order with Woodheads for 100 springs (50 pairs).
