Re: Dunlop Jack.

Many thanks for BY1/H9.6.27. We have noted with interest that the Dunlop Company's report on the Jack which failed, is to the effect that "the first intention screw for obtaining the correct setting for the axle height initially had not been used".

I have seen the person who operated the Jack and am informed that such is not the case - that is to say, the first-intention screw operated by hand was used for the purpose of getting the approximate height required under the axle before starting to operate the Jack by the handle.

That, however, does not seem to me to deal with the whole issue, because, even if we had done what is suggested and not used the first-intention screw, it seems to me that that is exactly what quite a number of people would do.

We note that they are making up a new sample and that it will have cast on it "Caution - do not overwind". We are not sure that this is going to make it sufficiently fool-proof but if the fact really is, that for certain operations such as lifting the back, it is essential to operate the first-intention screw by hand.

If our understanding on this latter point is correct, we doubt if it will suffice to merely say on it "Do not overwind". We will, however, give you our suggestions on this point when we have seen the new sample.

I presume the arrangement referred to in your former memo - BY {R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} /Mtn1/C31.5.27. regarding Mr. Thiselton bringing another Jack along here, is for the time being, cancelled.

In that memo you asked about the length of the handle and the reply on this point is, that we should like it 26".
