γ 1201. Expl. Dept. Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Gry.{Shadwell Grylls}13/MJ. 26th. October, 1936. V.W. Pilkington, Esq., Leyland Motors Ltd., Leyland, Lancashire. Dear Mr. Pilkington, You very kindly said you would give us some more information on aluminium die cast parts. We would be very grateful for answers to the following questions - (1) On your gearbox the percentage saving in weight of metal used for casting over a sand casting. (2) Percentage saving in hours machining. (3) Whether a satisfactory casting could be made of .175 general section. (4) Whether you think there is any limit to the size at which die castings would cease to be cheaper than sand. Would there be any difficulties in die casting a six cylinder one piece cylinder block and crankcase. I do not think our servo drawing mentions the normal "off" clearance. .020 end float of the drum is about correct. Yours sincerely, | ||
