Rolls-Royce Ltd., Nightingale Road, Derby. WST For the attention of Mr. H.{Arthur M. Hanbury - Head Complaints} E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} West. Dear Sirs, In further reference to your esteemed favour of the 2nd inst., we have now examined Speedometer No. G.227, and we found that there was a flaw in the metal where the needle had broken off. This, as you probably are aware, is a very rare trouble, but, in any case, we have slightly modified the tool for making the sets for this needle, and when such new needles come into production in a week or two, we do not think that there should be any further risk at all of a flaw developing due to the corners in the needle. In reference to the trip spindle which you sent back and which had broken, we found on examination that this particular spindle has been very greatly strained, as is evidenced by the flexible wire portion of it being undone. We should like to point out that we have used these steel spindles on your instruments for nearly 3 years, and we believe that this is the first instance of the spindle having snapped. We are, however, very carefully watching this particular point, and, if any evidence of weakness is found, we shall strengthen it up. Always at your service, We beg to remain, Yours faithfully, For THE A.T. SPEEDOMETER CO., LTD. A.{Mr Adams} H.{Arthur M. Hanbury - Head Complaints} Buckland Director. | ||
