We have carried out some tests to determine the power losses in a Phantom gear box due to the silent 2nd. gear in which the loose pinion is on the layshaft. The test was carried out as follows in each case the 1st. motion shaft being driven by an electric motor. (1) In top gear; so that the input power was expended in turning 3 sets of continuous gears. (2) In Neutral, the 3rd. motion shaft being prevented from turning due to the drag of the synchromesh cones by a measured torque. The input power turns two sets of continuous gears and provides the induced torque on the 3rd. motion shaft. From these two results the extra power losses of the helical 2nd. gear can be computed. The gear box was filled to the normal level with engine oil at approx. 30°C. Ha/Gry.{Shadwell Grylls} | ||
