Y 5-520. RHC.{R. H. Coverley - Production Engineer} From Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Les.{Ivan A. Leslie} c. to E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} c. to By.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Les.13/MA. 9.12.32. LOSS OF OIL FROM J.III TYPE SHOCK DAMPERS. We have now had several complaints of shock-dampers losing oil, it is therefore of the utmost importance that we should carry out further investigation on the Peregrine Bumper chassis. One of the main causes of the trouble, is that the piece sweated into the bush nearest the frame is not oil tight. We have therefore been forced to fit a bush with a dead end, as on present production. To overcome this trouble the new bush F.100728 issued in By/HEB.{H. Biraben}4/M.{Mr Moon / Mr Moore} 7.12.32., should be fitted to all dampers whenever they are dismantled. The other leak is from the shock damper glands. At the moment there are 2 schemes which we want to try:- (1) Stiffened gland cover F.100729 in order to enable more compression on the gland. This requires no alteration to the damper. (2) Adjustable screw gland, in the final scheme for this it will be necessary to have new body castings. In order to test this however the D.O. have prepared a temporary scheme, where the gland nut screws on to the bush. This has been issued under By/HEB.{H. Biraben}8/M.{Mr Moon / Mr Moore} 8.12.32. In order that we can make an early decision as to the specification of the final damper will you please urge that the following material is produced for the Peregrine Bumper chassis. (1) 4 solid end bushes F.100728. (2) 2 stiffened gland covers F.100729. (3) For 2 dampers to have screwed gland nuts to By/HEB.{H. Biraben}8/M8.12.32. Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Les.{Ivan A.
