IN REPLY PLEASE REFER TO Z DEPT Za/EE June 30th 1920 Messrs Rolls-Royce Ltd., Nightingale Road, DERBY. X.2656 X.8014a Dear Sirs, Your letter of 25th inst. ref.EFC5/T has been having our very careful attention, and we have carefully examined the brushes returned. It is, of course, rather difficult to attempt any diagnosis of the trouble without inspecting the actual conditions under which the brushes are working, but we can detect no fall-off in the quality of the brush. We are subjecting it to further tests, but do not anticipate that we shall find anything wrong. The trouble that you report may be due to any one of several causes but the most likely explanation that suggests itself to us is that the brush was not quite free in the holder, and the tendency to stick has caused sparking between the brush and the commutator, which has caused the surface of the brush to deteriorate and wear quickly. This explanation seems to be borne out by the sample you send us, which shows signs of the coppering having fused up into globules and than torn away from the brush. As requested we return the two good samples, together with two more new main brushes which, however, we have had to fit up with terminals the nearest approach to the special Lucas type that we have by us. We hope that these terminals will suit you all right and trust that you will find the dynamo operate satisfactorily after ALL QUOTATIONS SUBJECT TO ACCEPTANCE WITHIN 14 DAYS | ||
