This column is for Name of Person addressed. Mr Barrington DATE. 2/10/12 EP{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer}46/T21012 X374 RE VALVE SPRING TESTS. I have returned to Mr Nadin another taper valve spring which has broken on test after 100 hours or the equivalent of 6,000 miles. Mr Nadin reports that the breaks which are two or three in number are due absolutely to flaws in the material. We are still running these springs but it appears as though we are testing a bad batch of springs. In view of the above I have mentioned to Mr Nadin that the springs now in the stores of this type should be returned as unsatisfactory and a further consignment supplied. I shall be glad if you will take up this matter as the valve spring question does not appear to be in any way settled as I cannot pass for standardization the taper valve springs in their present state.
