20 HP. STEERING. F5430

It will be noticed in the reports of 9-G-lll car running in France, that the tubular support for the steering failed after approximately 18,000 miles. The failure occurred close to the bracket which is brazed on to the end of the tube and bolted to the frame.

On the bumping tests in connection with the 20 HP: cars, we frequently have this tube fail in the same place.

The tube at present is made of mild steel. The failure occurs where the tube is reduced in diameter. We suggest that an immediate improvement would be to improve the material and if possible increase the diameter of the tube at the point where it fails.

It is possible that when the diameter of the worm is increased on the 20 HP. and a new steering box made, it may be arranged that the steering is supported in a similar manner as it is on the Phantom.
