(Experimental Department)

Dear Sirs,

For the attention of Mr. Martindale.

With reference to yours of the 23rd inst., in connection with the failure of a rear brake adjuster spindle G.B.3272, we beg to state that the broken sample returned to us is undoubtedly weak and our present heat treatment and steel is not good enough for the strain this part has to stand, viz., locking the hand wheel with a nut.

We suggest therefore for future orders we make this part from 3% Nickel Case Hardening Steel (P.259), refine the cone to give the required tensile strength, turn out the carbon leaving the threads soft. Adopting this method you can rest assured you would get no further trouble of this description.

We are making one replacement cone by this method which we hope to send to you on Monday morning next.

We are returning the defective sample as per your request as you wish to keep this for record purposes.

Hoping the foregoing will meet with your approval.

With many thanks.

Yours faithfully,
for NEW HUDSON LTD.,
GENERAL MANAGER.

Enclos. Sample returned.
