We have still failed to get a satisfactory change on the Phantom III gearbox. The only way in which a reasonable change has been obtained is by rubbing the cones together on the road. After this treatment we have had a reasonable change but it has not lasted. We have therefore come to the conclusion that something peculiar is happening with regard to the cone bedding in the box. We want to find out all we can about this on the rig. The synchromesh cones should be copper plated and various tests run to see - (a) Whether a good bedding outside the box is reproduced in the box. (b) Whether when the cones are lapped in the box and a good bedding obtained, this bedding persists under various conditions of temperature. (c) Whether if the cones are lapped in the box they give a good change on the road. For this last experiment we will supply a gearbox which is going to be fitted to a car.
