X4057. G.W.Hancock Esq., Hotel de France, Chateauroux, Indre, FRANCE. From Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}5/MJ.5.12.32. Many thanks for your various notes. You have done well to cure the oil leak from the back bearing of the engine. It is a job that we are just going to tackle and your tests will assist us considerably. Plugs. - Since the HD.{Mr Hayward/Mr Huddy}15 plugs, which you were using whilst I was in France with you, seemed so good and only suffered from sooting up, I asked Hopps to make up a set for me having stepped mica insulation which would improve the point where they shewed deficiency. I should be glad to know if these are any better. Brakes. - We cannot understand the sponginess you complain of if you have taken up all the movement in the Hancock shoe. We admit that with the direct braking you are using we get a certain amount of pedal movement due to taking up the servo clearance and then brake shoe clearance, but after this everything is quite solid. Of course we have got a good servo and are getting plenty of front braking which naturally reduces the sponginess since the linkage to the rear brakes is only having to do half the work. We recently did a run around all the English hills and the brakes were remarkably good except that the front overheated a little and the front brake drums shewed signs of scoring. Are your brake drums scored?. Wheels. - Have you had any signs of your wheels coming loose?. Engine Tightness. - We find that when the water temperature is kept low the engine tightens up after a high speed burst. Can you confirm this?.
