To E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} c. to Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} c. to Hy.{Tom Haldenby - Plant Engineer} X1209 Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}3/KW.3.10.36. Valve Gear Research. Referring to E.7/HP.1.10.36. This is to confirm our discussion that you are in agreement with the arrangements now in hand to run a Ph.III engine unit driven through the valve gear, as already arranged with the Millwrights, see attached memo. We agree that the Wilcox-Rich measuring mechanism that you suggest is far simpler than the optical means which we tried out some few months ago, and should assist us in obtaining the required information. In the meantime the suggestion that by modifying the camshaft toe and plunger clearances the existing valve spring situation on production can be eased is being pursued by both experimental and design departments.
