SPECIAL CRANKSHAFTS.

The three crankshafts in special steel, two for Wraith in a carbon steel, and one for Phantom lll in a special low chromium high carbon, are to be dealt with as follows :-

(a). Wraith.

One of the Wraith shafts will be fully treated with either an oil or water quench, to give a brinell hardness of 302 to 321. This shaft is to be completely machined after the heat treatment specified and not in accordance with BY.5/G.25.11.37.

(b). Phantom lll.

Heat treated by Mr. Talbot to give a brinell hardness of 302 - 321, oil quenched only in this case.

(c). The remaining Wraith shaft will be heat treated in a machined condition, the exact condition will be determined later, but will follow in principle BY.5/G.25.11.37.

This whole matter has been already fully discussed with Mr. Talbot and the shafts outlined under (a) and (b) above are being dealt with at once, and issued for machining to standard Wraith and Phantom lll drawings respectively.
