Phantom III - Hardy Spicer Propeller Shaft.
We send herewith N.Sch.4991 showing the modifications required to adapt the Wraith II Propeller Shaft to the Phantom III.
The proposal is to use the Wraith II joints and sliding joint on all of the cars including the 25/30.
There will necessarily be some differences between the shafts for the different cars such as for example:-
(1) On the Wraith II the piece which is broached for the internal splines for the sliding joint has to be longer than for the other cars to clear the hand brake cross shaft.
(2) The lengths of the tubular part of the shafts will vary of course, but the diameter and thickness of the tubes can be the same for all except the long wheelbase Phantom III. This will have to be larger than 3" and very probably larger than the 3 1/8" already proposed.
(3) The holes in the connecting flanges should be reamed for fitting bolts in the case of the Phantom III, but can be tried clearance size for the other cars. If the loss of interchangeability is objected to, they must be reamed on all cars.
N.Sch.4991 also shows:-
(1) An aluminium plug secured in the inner member of the sliding joint with the idea of diminishing the possible out of balance due to grease in the joint.
(2) The use of "pen" steel adjusting discs for the needle roller bearings. We suggest discs 8,9,10 and
