Dear Mr. Evans,

Many thanks for your letter of the 26th inst.

At the moment we are concentrating our efforts on getting engines to run on really thin oils without undue oil consumption. We think that some of our piston scuffing troubles are due to delay in oil reaching the cylinder walls when starting under cold conditions.

The Americans have proved that they can run on oils of viscosity S.A.E.20 or below all the year round, with apparently beneficial results to wearing surfaces.

With our recent development of bearing materials we do not appear to be on the border line of film strength ruptures. We understand the big disadvantage of E.P. lubricants is that they are always likely to give trouble if used at temperatures of above 120°C. If there is a possibility of obtaining an E.P. lubricant of very low viscosity, unaffected by high temperatures, we should be interested in this.

Yours sincerely,

FOR ROLLS-ROYCE LTD.
