The price, performance, and power-absorption of Cotal gearboxes, with comparisons to Peugeot.

(6) The price of a Cotal gearbox for 4,5 cylinder capacity engines before the outbreak of war, was, series price 5,200 frs. plus 150 frs. for the agent. There is no precise information as to the series price of the 2,5 litres, but the sale price used by Peugeot was 3,500 frs.

(7) Another question upon which there seems tobe great difficulty in obtaining information, is the power-absorption of these gearboxes, though no-one seems to bother themselves about it much.

However, on the Peugeot cars which took part in the Mans 24 hours run these last two years and which were supplied with Cotal gearboxes, the engines developped 70 CV. on the brakes with a loss of 7 CV behind the box; 10% seems enormous but there is no serious evidence from these figures...1938.

In any case, speaking personally, I can state that a car which one can push easily by hand when fitted with a mechanical gearbox will become almost impossible to budge with a Cotal gearbox!!

G.P.

P.S. Our customers greatly praise the Cotal gearbox. Above all, Peugeot's customers maintain that they are more taken with this gearbox with it's easy handling, and with the 4th. gear which Peugeot's mechanical gearboxes do not possess.
