To EH. from R.{Sir Henry Royce} c. to CJ. c. to EFC. c. to BN.{W.O. Bentley / Mr Barrington} R11/G24.4.19. X. 3542 - Speed of Cars with Certain H.Ps., Varying Loads & Varying Road Resistances RE CAR 31 RB.{R. Bowen} I send you herewith copy of memorandum to Mr. Olley I should be glad if you would, at your earliest convenience, make a test on the engine shewing the increase in horse power throughout the usual range of engine speed, say, from 500 to 2,000, for the various modifications that can be introduced for old cars. It would be interesting if you could, in conjunction with Mr. Clark, make a series of curves shewing the speed of the car on the hills with certain engine horse powers, and with varying loads of complete car, varying road resistances. With these curves it will be found that a slight change in horse power, with a slight change in read resistance, and a slingt change in weight, will make a wonderful difference in the speed of a car on a given grade. Perhaps we shall ascertain in time that various tyres have a marked influence as well as various degrees of pressure. R.{Sir Henry Royce} Also the effect of light gear ratio and wheel sizes. You will find that anything which permits the engine to get away will make a wonderful difference. (Upside down text at bottom) R.R. 235A (500 T) (S.D. 408. 26-4-17) Bm. 2/156/13. | ||
