Re Chassis No.74-PW. - Atchley.

Attached is copy of letter dated 20th.inst. from the above owner, who also made a serious complaint of trouble with boiling last year.

We have had his car at W. during last month to fit high compression pistons.

A high speed fan and 15-tooth axle were fitted in 1922, and this car always had shutters in the bonnet.

The above points cover the recommendations referred to in EY's memo attached. The 14-tooth axle is a subsequent recommendation.

In October last we told customer (see Hr3/TB/23.10.23.) that we were carrying out a number of experiments, and that we did not wish to ask him to bring his car to Derby until we could feel confident that we have really overcome the trouble, and it was to cure this trouble that the car came to Derby in May.

We certainly cannot think it possible that the boiling is actually worse than it was before we raised the compression, but we know that boiling is always liable to occur on a long hill, or even during a fast run on the level in hot weather.

We really want to find out why this owner appears to be having so much trouble with boiling, and in view of the serious nature of his complaint and the large amount of previous correspondence with him on the same subject, we suggest that somebody should visit him to ascertain if there is really anything abnormal about the conditions under which the car is run or in the way it is driven.

We have not yet replied to the letter.

Attached is copy of EY's remarks - EY1/H26.6.24.
