CAR Bearings Several FILE 1020 Serial No.102. Rolls-Royce, Ltd. Derby, England. Hm.{Capt. W. Hallam - Head Repairs} Shutters. Seaholm considers shutters better than bypass thermostats on a Vee engine in which unbalance between two outlet thermostats can produce great differences in flow in the two blocks. (However, Ford uses two very simple clock spring thermostats of which I have sent sketches). Cadillac and big Packards are only cars now using shutters. There are advantages in keeping engine house warm in winter. Cadillac make their own shutters but get the bellows to operate them from Harrison, until recently, now from Fulton. Although the bellows goes in a chamber in the top tank and is not exposed to steam pressure, the increased temperature led to trouble with the Harrison bellows. Radiator Cap. Cadillac uses same pressure cap as Buick sample sent you. This is made by A.C. Cadillac run at 7 lbs. pressure and have run tests up to 15 lbs. Buick run at 3 to 5 lbs. Cadillac, because of design features, actually use smaller radiators than many cheaper, lighter cars. They, with their L-head engines, have 20% more heat loss to water than Buick. They were, therefore, first to be pushed into pressure cooling. Have not had a cooling complaint since. The Harrison ribbon-cellular radiator core would not stand the pressure. Cadillac had to buy a Long radiator of fin and tube construction, and show that it would do the job by cyclic hot and cold testing, before Harrison could be forced into giving them their present fin and tube type. The Harrison fin and tube is now quite satisfactory. Retention of anti-freeze is greatly improved. A sketch of the changes in the Cadillac radiator shape is attached. Morse Chain. The no-back-bend type of Morse chain has been used Spare OY.3/D/Apr.25.40. Car Work Notes on Visit to Cadillac April 16, 1940. | ||
