three thousand miles which the machines have so far run in their hands. Quoting from their report we have the following :-

"The increase in efficiency at low speed on these EW6A magnetos is definitely established, more especially so when starting up by hand on magneto ignition only, they are a considerable improvement upon the KW6 type".

They have however, now decided that the 6° extra range is not required - therefore we are taking steps to return these magnetos for modification in that respect (two have gone already), and we are asking Messrs. North to reduce the advance by reducing both full advance and full retard by 3° of motion. This will eliminate the inconsistency between one machine and another in the fully advanced position at high speeds, and also give a slight benefit in the fully retarded position in low speed sparking.

The modified machines will be replaced on chassis as soon as available with a view to running several more thousand miles before being proposed for standard.

An endurance test on one of these machines namely No.118718 has been run in our laboratory, largely with a view to testing the effect of the ventilated contact breaker where there is no question of hydro carbon vapours, and the following is a copy of my assistant's report WD.{Mr Wood/Mr Whitehead}76 in this connection :-
